First of all, I've never used a log nest for my parakeets, because it's more difficult for me to access to check up on the mother/babies, etc. and well--I prefer breeding boxes. I would buy nest box bedding for her at your local pet shop, or bird farm, ask specifically for parakeet bedding, so that it's something she can work with. Fill it and stop up any extra ends that aren't necessary other than one exit/entrance, MAYBE two, so she won't dig it all out and end up laying on a hard surface. Make sure she has PLENTY of calcium. Give her a cuttle bone, or mineral block for this, and maybe supplement their feed with sprouts, fruits/veggies, etc. if they'll take them. Watch her, but don't frequent her nest, or she may be too uncomfortable to lay. It definantly sounds like she has some eggs in the oven there. lol.

Watch her dropping. My female often began dropping large, moist stools when she was close to laying time. She got fatter, a little more nesty, and the male got more attentive and protective, eventually popping into the nest to check on her. Just make sure you can provide her with a comfortable, quiet, slightly secluded area so that she can get those eggs out on time and won't try to keep them in any longer than they are due (this could eventually cause problems). Check with your local pet shop/bird farm and do some research on the net to see if you can find more specifics on breeding parakeets. Pick up a book on the bird if you can that has a chapter on breeding. It should outline other important steps to take and how to be attentive to your pair's and eventually their offspring's needs. Breeding your keets is a lot of fun, and the babies are adorable once they get past that ugly pink stage ^^;

Have fun with your parakeets--hope there aren't any complications :)

She needs a nest box attached to the cage and filled with

nestling material you can buy both inexpensive at any pet store.

You say she looks fat. Birds that have developed egg's are

swollen in the lower abdomen.

If she has egg's in her body she would not mate again, she would sit in the nest and come out to drink and eat and poop.

The male would help feed her if she had layed the egg's.

A good avian diet is needed to be fed always, but now even more so. For starter's hard boil an egg 15 mins. cool in cold water, fed warm, but check and make sure it is not hot!

Leave the shell on the egg, cut the egg in small pieces, four atleast and put the egg in the food dish and make sure there us always plenty of cool, fresh water in a clean dish available.

Read and learn about breeding and careing for the hen and the chicks, in case the parents don't feed them, along with a healthy avian diet. Also read about egg binding and problems and sickness.

For starter's I will add two links, but also do searches with google and yahoo for information.

Watch the female carefully, ensure she isn't sick and that she drinks and eats enough. Get the nest ready ASAP-today.

um...birds lay eggs...she would lay 2-3 eggs in a nest, and sit on them...do you have a nest box set up? Have you seen eggs?

If there are eggs, just leave them be, and she should hatch them. You may need to change the diet to a breeding diet, and offer more food so the male can take it to her...if you have eggs...
You can't physically tell if your bird is ready to lay eggs, she won't look any fatter than usual (at least none of my birds did)

What kind of nest do you have? If it's an open nest, you may want to switch to a nest box, where it's all enclosed. You'll also want to put a little bit of wood shavings in there cushion the hard floor and so the warmth of the mom stays in there once she lays eggs. They won't lay all in one day either, they lay every other day. All you need to do is make sure she's getting plenty of food and water....but also make sure she's getting enough calcium so when she lays an egg the shell will be formed instead of soft. You can feed them hardboiled egg and crush the shell up right in the egg and they'll eat that, and the shell is a good source of calcium. Other than that there isn't much you can do, except leave them in a quiet area so they don't get stressed out too much. Hope all goes well!
